With a career-long focus on transportation and mobility, Ben Stupka has emerged as one of
Southeast Michigan leaders on regional public transit. He brings experience in all facets of
transit to his role as the RTA’s Executive Director, leading the funding, planning and coordination
for all public transit systems across the four-county footprint. Under Stupka’s leadership, the
RTA has emerged as an innovative regional change agent, concepting and incubating new
services and support systems. This includes the Detroit To Ann Arbor Express (D2A2), the
Detroit To Airport Express (DAX) and the MyRide2 mobility management system. Under his
leadership, the RTA has also assumed ownership of the QLINE streetcar service in Downtown
Detroit. Stupka’s 20 years of experience in transportation planning spans across the public and
private sectors – he’s led the development of Detroit's first transportation master plan, the
development of regional scale plans, corridor plans, and the delivery of several complete streets
projects. Stupka’s held senior positions at the global engineering firm WSP, where he led the
Michigan planning practice; the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District, where he oversaw long-
range capital and operating budgets; and the San Francisco County Transportation Authority,
where he managed sales tax funding and intergovernmental relations. Stupka has a Bachelor of
Arts in Social Relations from Michigan State University and has studied Urban and Regional
Planning, Transportation and Real Estate at the University of Michigan.
