A mobility wallet is an integrated transit payment system for users to store and manage payments, like tickets and fares, in one place. This technology is gaining popularity worldwide, and Southeast Michigan is joining the leading edge, first with a limited-scope pilot that tests an easier way to pay for transit.

RTA’s mobility wallet pilot connects with many public transportation options. This includes DDOT, SMART, QLINE, People Mover, MoGo, and at least one e-scooter company, as well as an option for TheRide. The mobility wallet pilot also explores ways to cap fares across providers and subsidy programs. This fare capping could save riders money and make transit more accessible.

How Mobility Wallets Work

The RTA is partnering with United Way of Southeast Michigan to provide a small test group of users with a pilot application and fare payment mechanism. This is the first step to larger mobility wallet integrations in Southeast Michigan.

  • Use an RTA-provided, digital account. Log in to get started.
  • See and compare transit options.
  • Pay from the app or physical card with withdrawals automated processed in the system and connected to financial institutions.

This one payment method covers many providers, eliminating transfer fares. Future development could include fare capping to eligible people.

  • Streamlined, accessible planning supports all riders from the very first ride.
  • Easy fare payment reduces the need for multiple tickets or payment methods.

30%

of workers in Detroit are transit dependent

The Mobility Wallet Pilot Program improves personal mobility and access for Michigan residents. The program most helps commuters using two or more bus routes, rails, or rideshare service in a single trip.

History

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) named RTA as one awardee for a mobility wallet pilot program. Ecolane and Feonix–Mobility Rising also won funds to develop mobility wallet solutions. The RTA solution is unique with a phased, human-centered approach that addresses the range of mobility options and fare technologies.

Community Support

The Michigan Mobility Wallet Challenge is a collaborative effort stemming from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the Office of Future Mobility and Electrification (OFME). It includes the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity and the Michigan Poverty Task Force.
